I find myself thinking about the paternal and the maternal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The paternal is the power to set direction. To distinguish right from wrong, point the way, and say, “Go this way.” Children need the paternal to find their place in society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But when the paternal is too strong, it cuts away. It can exclude \u2014 the child who struggles, the child who doesn’t fit the rules \u2014 saying, “You don’t belong here.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n The maternal is the power to hold. To receive whatever state a child is in, and affirm their very existence: “You are welcome here.” Children need the maternal to grow with a sense of safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But when the maternal is too strong, it swallows. It can take away the chance to face reality, protecting a child so completely that they never get to experience failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Both come from love. But when either one tips too far, something in a child’s growth begins to bend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This isn’t only true at home. The same thing happens in schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Inside every classroom, both the paternal and the maternal are always at work. Rules, grades, competition, roles \u2014 these belong to the paternal. Receiving, listening, recognizing a child’s presence \u2014 these belong to the maternal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When the two are balanced and woven together, children can grow with security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But when that balance breaks, something goes wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Whenever I think about what lies behind school refusal, I always arrive at the same place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I sense that there are so many children who are blaming themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Children who try harder than anyone to follow the rules of “how things should be” and “what must be done.” The more earnest they are, the less they can forgive themselves for falling even slightly short.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When a dark feeling surfaces. When they fail at something. “I shouldn’t feel this way,” they tell themselves \u2014 and the self-blame only deepens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This may be what it looks like when a child has taken in too much of the paternal on the inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Cut at from the outside for not being enough. Cut at from within by themselves. Nowhere left that will simply hold them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When that happens, the heart fills up \u2014 and the body stops moving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There is another pattern too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A child who has been held with deep love at home, but the moment they step into the friction of school, they find they cannot cope. Because they had so few chances to experience failure, even small difficulties become an unbearable weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Both are forms of love. But when either is missing, it becomes harder for a child to grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So what can we do in education?<\/p>\n\n\n\n When I thought about what I wanted to hold dear in my classroom this year, two directions emerged naturally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “It’s okay to fail.” “It’s okay to be yourself.” “It’s okay to feel whatever you feel.”<\/em> \u2014 This is the holding of the maternal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “Find your own axis.” “Put things into words.” “Keep thinking.”<\/em> \u2014 This is the direction of the paternal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Safety in being received \u2014 alongside the gentle push to keep thinking. Both living together in one place. That, I believe, is what makes a space truly safe for children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This way of seeing the paternal and the maternal is something I learned from the many writings of Hayao Kawai.
