support a child’s growth?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n I admire teachers who can say, clearly and firmly, “That is not okay.” But I equally admire teachers who pause and wonder, “Why did this child do that?” \u2014 teachers who look for the story behind the behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n These two qualities may seem like opposites. But I believe they need to coexist within the same person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Role of Paternal and Maternal Care<\/p>\n\n\n\n When I use the words “paternal” and “maternal,” I am not talking about gender. I am talking about two different styles of relating to children.It doesn’t mean that men are naturally paternal, or that women are naturally maternal. Both ways of caring exist within every one of us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Paternal care means conveying the rules of society and the difference between right and wrong. When a child hurts a friend, or breaks a promise \u2014 in those moments, it means having the courage to say clearly, “That is not something we do,” rather than softening or sidestepping the truth. It is the kind of care that builds the inner compass a child will need to navigate the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maternal care, on the other hand, means creating a foundation of unconditional acceptance. It is the kind of care that allows a child who has just been corrected to still feel, “Even so, I belong here.” It means building a place that a child can always come back to, even after they have stumbled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Children need both. With only paternal care, a classroom becomes suffocating. With only maternal care, children miss out on learning what truly matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And yet, in reality, classroom teachers are expected to provide both \u2014 entirely on their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Standing before thirty or more children, a teacher must know when to be firm and when to be gentle. That is no small thing.Everyone has their strengths and their blind spots. Some teachers are skilled at setting boundaries but find it harder to simply listen and hold space. Others are natural nurturers but struggle to deliver difficult truths. That is simply part of being human.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I once witnessed something that stayed with me, in a team of teachers across one school year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I won’t go into detail, but what I saw was this: teachers reaching across classroom boundaries, each bringing something different, together supporting the children intheir care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In certain moments, one teacher would step forward to deliver a hard message with clarity and conviction. Afterward, another teacher would quietly move in \u2014 sitting with the child, listening, offering reassurance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n None of this was scripted. Every teacher carried both the paternal and the maternal within them. What shifted naturally was which quality rose to the surface, depending on the child, the moment, the need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One person would offer what was needed. Another would gently fill in what remained.And in that layering of care, the children were held.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It doesn’t have to rest on one person’s shoulders. When a team shares the weight \u2014 balancing the paternal and the maternal together \u2014 something better becomes possible for the children in their care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One last thought. When one is missing, the classroom loses its balance, quietly and slowly. But when both are present, children grow with a sense of safety \u2014 free to be themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You don’t have to be perfect. What matters is that we show up for the children in our own way \u2014 and that we lean on each other as we do.
