A new school year has begun, and one month has already passed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The class I took on this year is full of children who have their own thoughts and opinions. But when it comes to “doing what needs to be done,” I sensed a certain unsteadiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Throughout April, I spoke to them again and again. About turning in assignments. About homework. About the importance of building daily habits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When I talked, the children listened quietly. They nodded. They made eye contact. They looked like they understood. So I thought my words had gotten through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But the next day\u2014 the assignments didn’t come in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They weren’t being defiant. They weren’t fooling around. And that’s exactly what made it so hard to understand. What wasn’t reaching them? Honestly, I felt lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Looking back now, I think it was because the children themselves hadn’t realized what they weren’t able to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What I came to see over the course of April was not that they “couldn’t do it,” but that they had come this far without ever knowing how.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Turning in an assignment may seem like a simple thing, but it’s actually built on many small layers of not-knowing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What had been missing wasn’t words. It was structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With that in mind, I changed my approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And slowly, things began to shift. One child started putting checkmarks in their planner on their own. When I introduced a method called “daily task management” to the class, some children began making their own daily schedules, building in time for homework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What words hadn’t moved, a simple structure set into motion\u2014used by the children themselves. It was a small change, but a real one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Of course, there are still children I haven’t reached. The faces of those who can’t yet turn things in are becoming clearer. For them, I need to search for a different path\u2014together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For May, I’ve set one goal: helping them become able to turn in their assignments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Not trying to change things with words alone, but building small structures and stacking up experiences of success. When they manage to turn something in, I acknowledge it on the spot. When they don’t, I leave a way back so they can try again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
April was a time for noticing. May, I hope, will be the time things begin to change.
