As I spend time with my class, I’m reminded that each child carries their own story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There are children who, in their daily lives, struggle to show what they’re truly capable of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Behind what may look like “not doing enough,” there are layers of factors\u2014difficulty managing time, emotional ups and downs, and the dynamics within their families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the midst of all this, something happened that made me reflect on my own approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During a meeting with a parent, my mind was focused on one thing: “How can we make this situation better?” But what I realized afterward was that this parent had their own hopes, their own reasons for the choices they had made. I hadn’t listened closely enough to understand that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I had moved to “here’s what we should do” before asking “why are things this way for you?” When I realized that, it stung a little.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In another situation, I was so focused on responding to a parent’s request that I ended up saying to a child, “Let’s work hard together.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But I don’t think that was what the child needed to hear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What lived inside that child was something deeper, something that came before effort\u2014 a feeling that hadn’t yet found words. I had skipped right past it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Responding to what adults hope for, and staying close to what a child feels\u2014 sometimes those two things align. Sometimes they don’t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When they didn’t, which one was I looking at? When I ask myself that, I don’t always have an answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Seeing the class as a whole. And at the same time, being present for each individual. I know both matter, yet holding them together is something I find difficult every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When “getting better at something” becomes the only goal, there’s a risk of leaving behind what the child is actually feeling\u2014the weight they’re carrying right now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What truly matters is not only asking “How can we help them improve?” but also “How is this child feeling, right now, in this moment?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To see the child. And to listen to the hopes of the adults around them, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I don’t have the answers yet. But I don’t want to stop asking the questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
