I’ve always wanted to be a kind person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Whenever I’m worried about a child in my class, or troubled by an exchange with a parent, I find myself turning to our school counselor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And each time, she asks me, quietly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“I wonder what that child is feeling.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“What do you think was in that parent’s heart when they said that?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Every time she places this question in front of me, something in me catches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I realize, again and again, just how often I had been seeing things from the perspective of the one being troubled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Not “a child who is causing trouble,” but “a child who is troubled.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Not “a parent making unreasonable demands,” but “a parent carrying anxiety.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Just a small shift in perspective, and the same situation looks like an entirely different landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So this is what people mean by “scales falling from your eyes,” I find myself thinking, more than once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Each time I talk with the counselor, I come away aware of how narrow my own view had been \u2014 and at the same time, saved by the new way of seeing she has offered me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Carrying that feeling, I return, once again, to my own daily life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Out in the field, there are so many moments when I have to make decisions on the spot, all while holding responsibility for the safety and learning of so many children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
My mind, in those moments, feels like a computer with too many windows open at once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And still \u2014 I want to widen the vessel of my heart, so that even in those moments, I can turn my thoughts to what lies behind the other person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Even on the busiest of days, packed with task after task, I want to be someone who isn’t crushed by the rush \u2014 someone who can, with a clear and unclouded heart, draw out the question from within: “I wonder what they are feeling.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That, I think, may be one face of what we call “kindness.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kindness isn’t a personality trait, or a talent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
