The Time I Found My Way Back to Myself<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

My time with my counselor has been, for me,
a time of slowly finding my way back to myself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She is a very gentle person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She never rushes toward answers,
but waits quietly until I find my own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She receives every word without judgment,
walking softly beside me, as if always just a step away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it came to my son’s school refusal,
I kept looking outward for solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What would get him back to school?
What could I do to return things to the way they were?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But little by little,
she helped me turn that gaze inward\u2014
toward my own heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is what she taught me, slowly, over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before I knew it, we were nearing our eightieth session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each one brought only a small change.
But I have come to feel
there are places you can only reach
by walking there,
one small step at a time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I think of my son,
and of the children I meet at school who struggle to come,
there is one thing I feel strongly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So many of them are blaming themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even before they stop coming to school,
there are already rules living inside them\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I should be this way.
I have to do it this way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the more earnest the child,
the harder they try to follow those rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So when even the smallest shadow of doubt,
or a darker feeling, rises within them\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I shouldn’t feel this way\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

they turn that weight back on themselves.
Again and again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Feelings with nowhere to go
are pushed deeper and deeper inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Without realizing it,
their hearts become full.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Until they can no longer carry it.
Until they can no longer move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And going to school becomes too difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I believe that this kind of inner movement
may be one of the quiet forces behind school refusal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

School is a small society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are joyful moments.
But there are just as many difficult ones,
and things that simply aren\u2019t fair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If a child meets each of those moments thinking,
It must be my fault\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

that becomes a weight
no one should have to carry alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The person I was back then.

Perhaps we were all carrying
the same invisible heaviness
